A few late night pieces of kibble or a little treat is usually all that is required for tummy rumbles caused by going without food too long.
Another possibility to consider for hacking/coughing/retching is acid reflux. There has been more talk of this on YT relatively recently. An antacid might be required in those cases.
One other thought: my Teddy often suffers dry mouth when he sleeps. Sometimes he will sound like he is hacking up a furball when he wakes. I often wet his gums or make him drink from my hand late at night and early in the morning. This helps him.
