Yeah once he gets a command pretty good, you don't have to treat. Just say Good Boy or pet him.

A neat trick that is very impressive is to teach left hand and right hand. Just switch which hand you use to reach for his paw. Start with the one he wants to give you first. Then shake that paw and say "good left/right hand". When you offer your hand, go in at an extreme angle so it would be awkward for the dog to give you the wrong hand.
