My trainer did the same thing to Billi since her harness doesn't have a front clasp. She makes up a million excuses that the leash being behind her scares her or that it's easier to control them when you can yank the leash and make them look at you (not in a bad way, it's hard to describe, but I would never allow anyone to harm my babies)- no matter what she says, I refuse to let her put the leash on her collar. She tried to sneak it when she did one on one work with her and I about read her the riot act.
Point blank, no leash on their collar, especially if they aren't in charge of their vet bills. They don't have to deal with the life-long complications of it, we do.
