Default collar vs harness

I was told that you're not suppose to put the leash on the collar because you can collapse their trachea. So I've always used the easy walk harness. I recently started classed with him and he wasn't responding to me. The trainer told me to put the leash on his collar. I stated my concern and she assured me it wasn't anything to be concerned about. I've tried it and he does walk better and definitely doesn't pull....probably because he's afraid his neck will snap if he does any sudden movements.
Can anyone assure me this isn't a big deal and that I can continue to do it this way, or am I setting myself up for a collapsed trachea or something. I realize she's a professional dog trainer and knows what she's talking about. Just wanted other opinions.
And he is a big 10 pound yorkie... almost 1 years old.
