My Ruby Bella did the same thing and Yes, she ruined her beautiful hair/top knot !
I tried single bands, double bands, soft scrunchies, everything. She just dug and dug at her top knot pulling and pulling at it until she had very little hair left. I finally had to just cut it before she did any more damage. She is not sporting some very boyish style bangs and I am hoping that it will grow back thicker but its not looking promising. Its been about 6 7 weeks since I cut it and we are almost to the point of them being long enough to put in a small pony in the front since the crown has not grown in yet.
I really miss her beautiful long hair.
