Males un-neutered can probably be bred for a very long time, but the key question is should they be bred at older ages? Will the breeding be successful? How much strain will it put on an elderly dogs heart? What is the viability of his semen and the health thereof?
This is your mothers dog, does she want him bred? Has he been bred before?
The AKC has some requirements for older dogs being bred and validation of the litter thereof. Go to
www.akc.org and do a search on there, or phone them up and ask your questions of them. For example I have a male stud of 8+ years old who is registered with AKC on OPEN REGISTRATION, are there any special requirements I need to do if I decide to breed this male? Oh an BTW unless you are the owner of record at AKC you can't sign the oaperwork for litter registration your Mother needs to. You can't breed a dog and register a litter if his registration is Limited and not Open registration.
Breeding is not something one goes into lightly - so consider all the ramifications thereof. There are articles in our library that talk about breeding - read them.
