To be effective, you have to give Benadryl every 4-6 hours bc it has such a short half-life. Vet Derms usually recommend trying either Zyrtec or Claritin bc they're both once a day dosages. Also, always try an antihistamine for at least 10 days before evaluating its effectiveness.
