Thinning shears are great for blending and hiding mistakes, and they're useful for matts (cut the matt with it then try to comb it out, you can save some hair and the spot isn't as obvious). I also use them to thin out Lola's butt area because it keeps the area cleaner.

For me thinning shears are necessary, but I'd just buy a cheap pair from Sally's. The pair I use were my mom's from when she went to beauty school in the 80's, she says they weren't expensive.
My straight shears were $10 at Sally's and they work great.

I'm wondering about curved shears too, for the paws and beard.
