When Gracie was a puppy I bought some gel made for dogs. She hated it! She would rub her face into the carpeting trying to get it off!
As soon as it dried the hairs would go back up anyway.
So it was a waste of money. The oil sounds like a much better idea and it would be good for the skin as well.
