I'd say that unless there is someone else in the home or arrangements were made for the dog to have human companionship during those long hours, it's probably not in the best interest of the dog.

Personally, I couldn't get a dog to only spend 3-4 hours a day, tops, with it most days if I knew that there wasn't at least another family member in the household for the dog to share a strong bond with.
