We call ours nicknames all the time. I don't think it would be a problem to change her name, but he would just think of a new nickname.
Perhaps if you use nicknames that YOU like, he might follow and use those instead. If my dog's name was MeSo, I wouldn't be able to resist calling her the following, depending on what she was doing at the moment: MeSo pretty, MeSo precious, MeSo ferocious, MeSo silly, MeSo happy, etc.
