Glad to here I'm not alone in this experience.
I downsized from a house that was around 3,600 sq ft to one that is less than 1,000 ...but that was four years ago! And I have held onto soooo much stuff all thus time. The last house had a nook and a dining room, a living room and a family room, three bathrooms and a finished basement. I had duplicates, or triplicates of everything! And while I was able to pass on a lot of the big stuff to help furnish both my kid's college apartments, all my stuff from the various rooms I'd kept for the most part.
Now, I just have one living room, one kitchen/diner, one bathroom, and every one of my current rooms is much smaller than the previous. My bedroom is half the size of my last, and my bedroom closet is a quarter of the size of the previous, so I was literally busting at the seams.
I have 3 huge contractor size bags to throw out thus far. My garbage day isn't until Friday, so I reckon I will probably fill another 3 by then. I also have two totes overflowing of items to donate, so I'll be heading to Goodwill first thing in the morning to empty those.
*having the empty totes to sort things into is really working out great! It's much better than piles on the floor. Everything is contained neatly and I just walk a filled tote to the room it belongs in and grab another empty one to take its place.
