I had a similar issue with our new puppy but he didn't just cry for a few hours, he cried ALL night. He was crated downstairs the same way i did with my first dog but all dogs are different and this one wasn't having that, so i took the advice of some here, put my t-shirt in his crate and brought him upstairs beside our bed. He cried a bit but i put my fingers in the crate and spoke softly to him, about 10 minutes later he was asleep and only woke once to go pee. Now all it takes is a few seconds of finger licking/sniffing and he's sleeping away in his crate beside our bed. I think it helps knowing we're there and he can see me/my hand. Last night he slept from 10-6am, first uninterrupted sleep in over a week, it was a beautiful thing lol
