My tree is too bright, too, eye-dazzling, but at least the lights are colored and that seems to tone it down some but when I've had enough, at least I can dim the lights down. I love white lights but worry they would be way too bright on a full-sized tree in the evenings when the den lights are dimmed down. If I used white lights or had a white tree with white lights, I'd have to use the dimmer switch most evenings as my tree sits pretty close to the big screen which emits a huge amount of light.
