Default Yorkie pulls against leash (protests direction)

Hello all,

I'm in a unique situation. I just moved in with my girlfriend who has a 3yo yorkie named Lilikoi -- I work on the phone from home, and Lilikoi isn't house (or otherwise) trained. I'll save questions for request barking for another time.

Right now, I need to keep her on a leash clipped to me so that she doesn't randomly "go" in the apartment -- no problem. I keep her crate nearby, and she finds comfort in her crate. When I need to move around though, she'll follow me SOMETIMES.. other times, it feels like we're gearing up for a power struggle and I end up having to just carry her (she does try to run sometimes). This is the same thing with walks outside, and it's frustrating.

I can't be the only one that's dealt with a willful Yorkie that won't walk/follow along.. what did you do to remedy this?

I'm new to dog ownership and want to hire a dog trainer, but in the meanwhile.. I also want to educate / train myself to be a good dog owner / trainer as well.

Appreciate your input and advice!!
