Poor little guy- his previous life sounds horrible. I have a male 7 years old- he is neutered. From my experience with him “ a tired dog is a happy dog”. It may or may not work, but you can start with making sure he has play time or a nice walk prior before going to bed. My Peanut doesn't bark at night, however if he doesn't have a walk or played with before going to bed he will jump on the bed with his toy- dropping it on my face and then barking right in my face to get him to play with me!! Soooo I have to make sure he had exercise prior to sleeping, or we work on our training- which Yorkies love.

Do you have him in a crate? You can also try putting him in the room with you, with a blanket over the crate. He may- given his past, want to not be alone and that’s why he is barking.
