Default Potty Training Status at 22 weeks (5 months)

So Onyx (a Maltese and Yorkie mix) is 22 weeks old.

We have been crate training him. He sleeps there (happily) every night. No more waking up in the middle of the night at 3AM to let him out. He holds his pee/poop from midnight to 7AM without a problem.

While we are away at work on weekdays (9AM-4PM), Onyx stays in the crate until someone comes home to let him outside (he doesn't stay in the crate for more than 3-4 hours when we are at work thanks to flexible schedules and my bf's brother who visits daily during the day). When we are home and after he pees and poops, he has access to our bedroom but we do not let him go out of the bedroom to limit his freedom.

When he is in our bedroom, he will walk to the door and sits and stares at us to let us know he has to go outside to do his business. When I ask him, "Onyx, do you need to pee pee?" he doesn't bark but just stares. I'm guessing he is too young to bark to let us know.

He does not poop or pee on the bedroom carpet floor. SOOOOO, we let him get on the bed. At first he was super cute just snuggling in the bed but then he peed. It happened twice so now we don't allow him on the bed.

Onyx was good about walking to do the bedroom door to let us know he needs to go outside so we let him stay with us in the living room area while he was supervised. He peed on the living room rug a few times.

Is he marking his territory?? Or is it because it's just brand new to him?? How come he knows not to pee in our bedroom but not the bed or the living room rug???

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
