Worms are very contagious to your other dogs and most often are shared with other animals in close proximity to eAchother. Most worms you actually can't see, tape worm generally looks like a rice grain but that is because tape worm has a long segmented body and pieces are shed off in segments. Tapeworm is Often associated with flea problems. Praziquantel is the medication usually used to treat tapeworm. A fecal to the vet is always a great choice because you know exactly what you are treating, if you choose to purchase an over the counter treatment make sure if includes tape- a lot of them are only piperzine and will only treat roundworm.
