Confused night time barking - HELP!!

Hi everyone, this is my first post and I'm looking forward to learning lots! My yorkie Jaxon is 5 months old and we've had him since mid January. He is usually very good during the day but recently has started barking at night. This will continue for an hour or more! It's not exactly what you want at 2am. He has his own 'area' on the main floor of our home - baby gated, with his heating pad, bed, food and then the area where his puppy pads are. I know it's because of him being alone - as soon as we come downstairs he stops. Any suggestions on how to have him stop without us coming downstairs for him? I know that alllowing him to sleep with us would probably stop the problem but it's not what I want to do. Often once my husband gets up and leaves for work, the barking starts again until I get up. I don't mind him barking for a reason, but this seems like separation anxiety??
