In California we have the Death Cap Mushroom that is responsible for many deaths with humans and dogs. People from Asia mistaken it for a native edible mushroom and those who have eaten it and survived ended up needing a liver transplant. No matter how vigilant dog owners are, the problem is they are very small when they first sprout (usually after a rain) and hard to see especially if they are below grass line or surrounded by foliage. You may not even be aware your dog has eaten one. I was told they are enticing to dogs because they have a sweet fragrant that they can smell.
