I'm unfamiliar with European or British registries but here is what I did when I bred my chesapeake 20ish years ago and why. I wanted a pup I could train from day one once weaned. I had an AKC male chesapeake that was the most stubborn dog I had ever met. I had read that was common with male chesies so I wanted a female AKC pup. Common practice at the time was stud fee provided first pick of the litter in lieu of cash. I sought out an AKC registered female seeking stud services. Contract, service, pregnancy and weaning completed I received the sweetest most loving chesapeake you have ever met. Beautiful to boot! Here's where it relates to your situation. I chose AKC even though other registries exist. They are the big dog here. Every other registry is second fiddle here. If you're looking for what I think you're looking for, use the registry that is the big dog in Europe or Britain and work down to the breeder from there. Just my opinion. In the future, while answering the question, what kind of dog is that, and are you sure, you can fluff up your chest and respond with a known registry and not receive that questioning look. Does that give you a quality dog... not necessarily... ya gotta keep doing that homework all the way down to the individual breeder. Does that fit with what you are asking? Does that apply to your situation in Britain? |

I'm from the States, so know all about the AKC. All of my previous dogs were AKC registered and Teddy is my first English dog!
Your advice is spot on and exactly the process I used to find Teddy. When I chose Teddy, I referred to the Yorkshire Terrier Club of the UK and found a breeder who bred her line from the only Yorkshire Terrier to ever win best in show at Crufts which compares to the Westminster dog show in the States. Teddy's lineage is from Champion Ozmilion Mystification, Best in Show at Crufts 1997. This has not guaranteed, however, that Teddy's coat is how it should be - as it is not. So, although I did my homework and went to the creme' de la creme', it did not result in me having the best of breed with respect to the coat, for example.
I have assumed that the site I posted above is similar to the club which represents the Yorkshire Terrier in the UK but, not being familiar with the breed but very familiar with the controversy, I'm just not sure!
In any event, I just want a happy, healthy puppy who will make a good companion for Teddy and know that I can sleep at night because I supported an ethical breeder!
