I use a combination of both potty pads and outdoors. I live alone in a 3 story town home. Getting up in the middle of the night to go down 3 flights of stairs was a problem for me. I could never really fall back to sleep.
In my case the potty pads work for me when I'm at work during the day and at night. When I am at home, she gets frequent walks and has no problems peeing and pooping outside. In the case of bad weather (which she hates) potty pads are the answer. At friends house, again it's a non issue because she also goes outside. I know to walk her a few minutes after she eats and then she is good for about 5 hours.

So it really depends on your own personal situation and tolerances. I found the combination of potty pads and going outside work best for me. In either case each have their advantages and disadvantages. You have to decide which you want to deal with.
