Again, Sheldon is young, so I can't say what to do with an adult, but I've found grooming much, much easier on an elevated surface. Sheldon doesn't wiggle and fight as much when he is elevated. Maybe that could help?
(I do put a towel down to keep him from slipping, and I haven't had to restrain him with a collar, but I do have a loop available during grooming in case I need it.)
He also hated brushing, but with consistency and gentle, praised time, he has gotten better already.
