Well, I believe a breeder should follow the Yorkie standard. The standard gives a description what the ideal Yorkie should look like. Even when you breed dogs within this standard, you are going to produce some dogs that don't fit the standard and these dogs should not be bred. The reason is if you take a dog that doesn't fit standard and continue to breed to dogs who don't fit standard the offspring will get further and further away from looking anything like a Yorkie. Breeders should try to conform to this standard, and most good breeders do this through showing their dogs. This breeder doesn't care about standard, they are trying to produce dogs with "good personalities" and while this too is very important, one should never rule out one over the other. It's possible to find a breeder who breeds both to standard and also chooses her breeding pets for personality and even more importantly health. While her breeding dogs are cute, they are not good examples of the breed, some have extremely kinky hair and others have long droopy ears. Also, besides the AKC, these dogs have been registered with APRI & CKC. I'm wondering why? This means that they probably sell breeding rights with every dog they sell, because anyone can register with the CKC and get breeding rights. Also, APRI was started by commercial breeders and what are most commonly known as puppy mill dogs. At least with the AKC a breeder can choose to sell with limited registration.
This is just my opinion, and I do believe we have too many pets available, if you just want a pet, I suggest you look at rescues and shelters. If you really want a Yorkie, I suggest you find a breeder who actually wants to improve the breed, in other ways than just personality. I've got to admit, some breeders don't even care about that, and I appreciate the fact that there are some who do. I say, you can find a breeder who strives for everything. |
