neomcin is a topical antibiotic, the type you would use on a scrape when your kids skin their knees. Its non irritating but you have to make sure you get the ointment NOT the cream. If you' re concerned about too many antibiotics the amount you use would be negligable, but petroleum jelly works fine. I'm lucky enough to have access to erythomycin so I use that.
