when i first got my puppy, i had him confined to the tiles in the kitchen and he'd just pee where ever he wanted on the tiles. i layed down a bunch of potty pads and praised him and gave him lots of treats when he eliminated in the right place. nowadays he'll walk to the potty pad on his own to pee or poo. he's good about it at home, but at other people's homes, he's not as reliable. not because he's not trained, but because it's a strange place and he has no idea where the potty pad is. and when he's gotta go, he's gotta go.
btw, you need to clean his accidents really well, with an enzyme cleaner, otherwise, he'll pick up the scent next time and think it's okay to go there too. |
What's a enzyme cleaner? Is that equivalent to that water and vinegar solution I heard about? We have a oxy-strength pet odor & stain eliminator with Arm & Hammer deodorizers, is that okay to use?
We thought about confining him to the kitchen too. If he eventually learns to potty only on the pads, is it then okay to allow him to run free about the apartment (and carpet)???
