Don't feel bad for doing what you have to do to make your baby feel safe. I truly believe it's personal preference. I crate some of my foster transports, and others I don't.
I had one that would turn into a mad dog when crated. She hated being confined into small spaces to the point that she bit through her tail at the shelter. The shelter didn't try anything else, labeled her unadoptable, amputated her tail, and let us try with her. I tried the crate, she went crazy. I tried an expen and she was fine! Like a completely different dog. Happy, bouncy, super excitable little 5 month old.
On the other hand, I also had a foster that was paralyzed and had no use of his back legs. Even without his legs, he would want to follow me everywhere which would cause his sores to open. That wasn't safe for him! So I crated him. He was safe, and close to me so he was happy.
Each situation is different, each pup is different. Don't feel bad for doing what you need to do to help make your puppy feel safe.
