Default Teething and diarrhea

Good morning! Dex is now 5 months old and had a terribly rough day yesterday with teething. His poor little mouth was so sore, he was just beside himself. He was chewing on everything I'd allow, he was mouthing blankets, my shirt...just everything. I gave him Kong from the freezer, just everything I could think of. He didn't nap all day, poor little guy

I finally got him settled into his playpen around 11 last night, and he was ok til about 5am. When we got up to see why he was fussing at that abnormally early time, we discovered he'd pretty much exploded all over the pen. Very runny stool. Diet hasn't changed.

Internet search has been unsatisfactory with advice of discontinuing food for 24 hours and just providing water. I'm not sure that's appropriate in this case? Is this normal with teething? This morning he's being very sucky, all cuddled up beside me sleeping. The pain must be better or poor little dude is just exhausted.

Thoughts?
