I happen to have one of the dogs who can hold out and not swallow the pill no matter what. It's more humane in my opinion to put it in food and second choice would be to put it in a pill shooter and just drop it down the back of there throat. Just doing it your way can make them think your trying to choke or stop them from breathing and can freak them out.
