I'm super glad that the vaccine did apparently work for that guy in Atlanta bc that means a lot of hope for those who get Ebola here in the US. My guess is that it will be made available on a case-by-case basis and/or they may tap that doctor for his antibodies against the disease since he got the vaccine. |
Oh, I heard they are out of the vaccine! I heard a couple of epidemiologists on TV yesterday who said there is no more Z-Mapp for now and while two people given it lived, two others died, but who knows what kind of disease management and support the latter two poor patients had. I read that it worked 100% on the 18 monkeys with a full, lethal load of the virus who were given it, the best result of any other drug so far, though that's no assurance it will work in humans until clinical trials are done. But at least there is ongoing work to develop more of it and other types of Ebola vaccines. Hopefully one day soon we get one that can be relatively quickly developed, tested and mass-produced.
It just looks like one of the worst diseases there is for those who progress to the hemorrhagic phase. I don't think the US or other first world countries around the world will have anywhere near the kind of raging outbreaks as they have in Western Africa.
