Bear is getting very bony lately I can feel every bone just sticking out in his back and behind.

I have made an appointment to see a vet early next week but am trying to figure out why he is losing so much weight. He is 2 1/2 pounds but I feel he needs to gain a good pound to be healthy. Do you think it could be worms? He is eating Innova puppy. Any ideas?
