I would be hesitant to switch foods for a puppy because of tear stains. There can be many other causes of the stains. For instance, Max has some staining right now that started with a brief bout of allergies brought on by wet grass.

I would first make sure the hair is staying out of the eyes. Then make sure you clean the area very well a couple times a day. Use a flea comb with tightly spaced teeth to separate the hair and get some of the nasty junk (yeast?) out. Wipe it with a wet cotton ball and then dry as much as possible with a dry cotton balls. Comb again.

Once the hair is stained, it essentially needs to grow out to get rid of the stain. I like Happytails Eye Pads to help remove stains while the hair is growing out.

Max and Teddy both suffered wet eyes off and on as pups. What really helped them was a course of antibiotics for an unrelated problems (unrelated to eyes).
