Probably not cheaper, but there are many purse type carriers you can use instead. If you'd use a purse carrier you might want to go that route instead.
Personally, I like the Sherpa carrier for air travel as it has more mesh and so is better ventilated than any purse carrier I own. As the dog is supposed to stay in the carrier and under the seat in front of you for the duration of the flight, I value the ventilation over aesthetics.
