i always walk mine with a leash. and it's not just to prevent them from getting into and after things he shouldn't. but it's not just to save him from himself, but it's also to save him from drivers who don't see him and can nearly clip even me while making a turn around a corner, people who don't see him and may kick him if they walk too close to me, and other big dogs who may not be as well behaved and thinks mine is a chew toy. i may trust him not to run off, but i can't strangers to not kick, step, or otherwise squash him.
