I would guess it would all depend. If the child has been raised with them then I don't think there would be a problem. But too many little children want to hold them by the neck or hold way too tight. It seems like some think they are a toy.
Now I have grandchildren and they have been tought how to hold them while sitting on the floor and NOT to pick them up.
