Most often, unless there is a chance the baby may become a show dog in which case the tail is not cut as short, usually the tail is docked at the point where the brown hair on the underneath of the tail, meets the black hair on the underneath of the tail. That ensures the tail will be a good length as the baby grown and the pup matures.
