I am so glad Eddie is better. I recommend crates for all car travel, and yes the crates have to be tethered or strapped down.
I have a hard-sider crate for Razzle, and the wire crates for the big dogs. In our recent car accident, all dogs came through it better than myself. A slight shifting of crates but then the tethering clamped on and all was well.
Just as a side note, dogs should be in their crates, without leashes as they can get tangled up etc. Which means training them, so that when you open the crate door, they wait to have their leashes put on.....
