Hi. I am not much good at this computer stuff and do not know how the Apple Genius actually displayed and recovered the data from ICloud at the store. i was so overjoyed she did that I did not query her. However I do know how to back up on the Cloud if you have not done that.
Under Settings, as you mentioned, there is an iCloud button above Mail etc. Hit the iCloud button and opposite you get a list under iCloud. At the bottom there is a button, Storage and backup. Press the right hand arrow and at the bottom it says Back Up Now. Press that and at least you know your data is backed up and can be recovered. :-) I assume though that it is auto backed up as I never did any known backup! As the free back up is limited I bought some extra backup space. It did not cost much.
