For spot cleaning, there's a great product called Urine Destroyer. We get it in a big jug and then put it in a spray bottle. I really like it because it doesn't just cover up the smell, it breaks down the enzymes in the urine/poop to keep your little one from going back to that spot repeatedly.

As far as the steamer, we have a Bissel shampooer as well. I always get the shampoo specifically for pets. It's always going to do a better job not just of getting rid of the pet stain, but in curing the scent, too.
