I bought my first purebred dog from a backyard breeder and it was a huge mistake, they don't do health testing, and they usually breed their dogs before they are even aware of their own dogs health problems. My beautiful pup had a genetic illness that caused him to be paralyzed, at the time, there was no treatment, but now I believe there might be treatment, but it's very expensive. Most insurance policies don't cover genetic conditions. Are you at work all day? Most puppies need someone there the first year, if I were you, I'd consider getting an older dog, who is already housebroken and can handle lots of alone time. Yorkies are great for someone who wants a newborn baby and is willing to devote the time. Once Yorkies are 5 or 6 they mellow out a little, but don't count on it. By the way, both of the breeds you are considering are prone to knee problems, and one knee surgery costs $1600 or more. I think the Chihuahua is probably a little cheaper to own, because Yorkies need regular grooming and haircuts. Chihuahua need regular groom, but at least they don't need expensive haircuts.
