Food for a sensitive tummy? I have a new puppy, not a Yorkie but his sister Pixie is, so we'll just say he's part Yorkie by association. Tuck arrived fine just nervous, I flew to pick him up. He was vet checked by my favorite vet in the group practice, a factory in my opinion. Tuck checked out super. He had a tough two weeks settling in and had a upset stromach starting the second week here. I had kept him on the same food as the breeder. Two weeks ago Friday, he had mucous with blood so I called and rushed him to the vet, open Friday's to 6 p.m. He saw a vet that I don't know but she has been there for many years, means nothing. He was alright, looked at his records, declared 'all puppies have worms.' He didn't previously but it's was a possibility. He was wisked off to be weighed and was given Drontal. I was given a prescription bottle with another whole Drontal to give 3 weeks later which would have been this coming Friday.
After arriving home about an hour total from leaving the vet, barfed his guts out, not focused and wobbly. I gave him pedialyte with nutrical in a syringe. After two hours became himself, playful. I was given a can of Prescription ID and gave it to him the next morning, barfed it up. I have never had a dog eat this and keep it down. I put him on chicken and rice he was fine.
Something bothered me, this was not normal to me. On the Monday after, was going to call the vet but his regular one operates on Mondays so I decided to call Tues. Meanwhile late in the day, looked up Drontal online. He was given a whole pill and should have been given 1/2 pill for his weight. I called and wanted to speak to the vet he saw, I was furious. She wouldn't speak with me and relayed the message to give him another whole pill as prescribed. I asked to speak with the hospital administrator and she said Dr. Brady had overdosed Tuck and apologized. She made an appointment to see his regular vet the next day, Tues. He did a fecal exam, as he did first check-up, normal, etc. No Giardia, etc. I was told to try several different dog foods until I found one that agreed, felt he had a sensitive stomach. His breeder says not so when he was with her. Results came back Friday. I can't switch him over to puppy food, even very gradually. I have tried Merrick puppy plate, Nutro natural puppy chicken meal, rice and oatmeal, Solid Gold, all dry. All not at once with chicken and rice between each alone. I now will try Canidae dry. Has anyone gone through this. Usually it takes a week to switch over but after an increase to only 5 pieces of dog food with chicken and rice, messy poop. The vet gave him gastrafate (for inflammed intestines)1.5cc divided into two doses. He is back to 2.4 lbs. after going down to 2 lbs. from the overdose day. Tuck is 20 weeks on Tuesday and supposed to be 4 lbs. as an adult. He's fine and playing, etc. Maybe I should keep him on bland longer before trying adding any dry food.
Sorry this is so long!
Appreciate any input.
