It's a great idea to give prior to rabies if you're worried as well. |
If a dog is going to have an adverse reaction to a vaccine(s), it will be the 2nd, or 3rd, or annual Boooster & so on & it can get worse, not better. This is why vaccines & rabies shot should be spaced out (2 weeks apart). Given separately, you'll also know which shot caused the bad reaction.
Turbo had an adverse reaction to his 3rd round of puppy shots. As soon as he was brought out to me, he was pawing his face & I told them, 'something's wrong' & they said he's fine. In the car, he was rubbing himself all over the car seat. I called the vet office from the parking lot & they told me to bring him in. By that time, he was starting to swell up & his eyes were starting to shut & his tongue was swollen, hanging out of his mouth!
They gave him benadryl shot, we waited half an hr & he was back to normal. They said it was a good thing that I recognized what was happening...(that story below*)
For Turbo's annual booster, he got an anti-inflammatory shot (more expensive than benadryl shot, but in Turbo's case, since he was known to have an adverse reaction, the vet chose this protocol for him) b4 receiving the vaccines & waited half an hr @ the vet's. He needs this done for every vaccine given. I chose not to re-vaccinate him again since studies shows that they have full immunity after the annual booster. He only gets rabies, according to law (here in CA it's every 3 years, wish it was longer

) & always an anti-inflammatory shot b4hand.
*Turbo has a sister that needs this done (not Princess), she got a mild allergic reaction to her 2nd round of puppy shots, so I knew what to look out for. I say mild bc that's what the ER vet said, but it didn't look mild to me. I didn't notice her swollen shut eyes, face & tongue hanging out til later that evening when it was time for her din din. She was sleeping all day after her shots, I thought she couldn't breath bc she was barely moving! All she needed was a simple benadryl shot.
I wonder if it runs in the family?
This site lists how much benadryl you can give, I wouldn't give aspirin unless approved by vet:
