This doesn't actually surprise me (only because I knew it already due to my neuroscience experience) BUT I think it will surprise a lot of people and think its great that you have highlighted it here.


Dogs respond more to physical cues like eye contact, petting, nipping etc and less to voice because evolution has put less of an emphasis on vocal communication hence the lack of speaking ability for all animals apart from humans.


This is why I believe it is sometimes very hard for we humans to communicate appropriately with mammals. We emphasize voice which is our fellow mammals less sophisticated mode of communication!
