You can't beat Oster clippers. They are real work horses. I have used one, model A5, on my schnauzer for years. They are heavy but as far as blade widths, you can get narrow cut oster blades so the actual width of cut can be pretty small with these. I recently bought one of the small Andis clippers as I read they were very quiet and thought they might work better for ears on my little guy. The Andis clippers don't cut as well IMO but they are a little quieter (My little guy still doesn't like it.). You are correct in that the #30 and #40 blade will cut very close.
