If purchase price is an issue then perhaps you need to rethink a dog unless you also look at pet health insurance. Vet costs are extremely high. If you cannot pay $1500-$2000 for a nice pet, you are not going to be able to afford the vet bills. You might want to check with your local vet as to what they charge for things like vaccinations, spay/neuters, what about teeth cleaning so important in toy breeds of dogs. Then there is the unhappy possibility of illness or accidents that can easily run a vet bill anywhere from $500 to over $2,000 for something like a broken leg. Pet insurance doesn't cover everything and you have to pay up first then the insurance company reimburses what ever they reimburse.
Quality food, grooming fees, etc are in addition to what i have mentioned. Ongoing medical issues are one kettle of fish, there are the other things that can happen as well that can be very costly.
