However once or twice a week we will be gone longer than 2 hours and so we let her roam the kitchen with a baby gate and put down a pee pad. I am returning to school in September and so she will be left alone for about 3-5 hours each day... I was just wondering how long it usually takes these small dogs to figure out asking to go out in these circumstances. Sometimes I've caught her pacing at the door and have taken her outside and she's gone, but she's never made any type of noise yet when she needs to go. I realize she's still little though

When I trained my Lexi to potty outside she quickly learned to go to the door, but just like yours would not make a sound. If I didn't see her there in time she would have an accident right in from of the door. I started using a bell hanging from the doorknob for her to hit when she needed to go. It only took her 2 days to master that. I started off this hitting it myself when I took her out to go potty, and she quickly learned. You can buy a fancy premade one from a pet store like Petco, but I just made one by getting some yarn and a bell from a craft store for a lot cheaper!
