I use Sentinel on both of my pups year round and have had no issues with it. In the late spring/summer, we'll add K9 Advantix II for tick coverage maybe every 6 weeks. I have found this regimen to be effective for us.

I also prefer the oral forms for fleas year round... don't really like having to apply the topical stuff and only do so in the warmer months just for ticks. I don't think it's less effective if applied correctly (my parents' beagle has always gotten the topical flea prevention and never had any fleas) but I find it kind of messy...and my pups love to roll on their backs or rub up on things after I apply it despite my attempts to distract them...ick! I would definitely look into the Sentinel though...I know many YT members including myself use it year round with success on pups of various ages and sizes.
