I hit the bell only when it was time to go potty. I personally used the front yard only for potty and the back yard for play (and potty If she needed to). I would go to the door, hit the bell and say, "let's go potty. " If she already doesn't know the word potty make sure you use it right when she goes too like "good potty". That way she makes the connection of the bell ringing and going potty. Once she goes potty she comes right back in so she knows the bell means go potty and that's it. She did go through a phase where she would ring the bell just to go outside and play. To stop that, I would give her enough time to go potty and if she didn't she came right back in. Once she realized she didn't get to play, she stopped that. I probably missed something, but i hope that helps!
