Well I would definately get as many people around the pup as you feel comfortable and maybe you could make a no holding rule. You could tell people that "he/she doesn't like being held and will jump out of your hand, so we just prefer you sit on the floor and pet him/her". I do think socialization is very important though, but I do have three big dogs and you probably should be a little more concerned with big dogs than little, not to mention one of our big dogs have a bit of a anger management issue so I'm very picky about socializtion.
