It is good that you are interested in showing and learning about proper conformation. Where in Texas do you live? The best way to learn is to attend some dog shows and find a mentor that is knowledgeable about yorkies and showing.

Your boy is handsome but as you realize it takes much more than that to make a show dog. Coat is very important. The only white that would be allowed would be a very small patch of white on the chest. Many pups are born with white on the chest but it usually fades away as the pup gets older. How old is your boy? From the picture it looks like his coat may not be silky and that could explain why you are having trouble getting any length to his coat. You would have to have someone familiar with yorkie coats to evaluate him. A silky coat is cool to touch and it reflects a lot of light.
